North writes (see reference below): The English coins struck in this border town require separate consideration, as they differ in style from the normal classes, being for the most part struck from dies made with local irons. Coins in the name of Edward were first minted there in AD1296, when the town was occupied by English troops. In the following year the Scots recaptured the town, but the castle was held by the English, who continued to strike coins whilst besieged during the winter of AD1297/8. Most of these siege coins were of crude workmanship, but some are found with regular Class I obverses. After the evacuation of the town by the Scots in AD1298 it remained in English hands until its recapture by Douglas and Randolph in AD1318, and Edwardian coins wre struck there throughout this period. Punches appear to have been brought from London in AD1310 when Edward II visited the town and this is the only time when the Berwick coins display the same characteristics as their English counterparts.","","","2011-08-26 21:35:31","2011-09-01 11:21:00","4","","1","2011-08-04","","","","","1","1","1","1","","","2","2","","dboughton","Dot Boughton","LANCUM","dboughton","Dot Boughton","Silver","","","","Struck or hammered","","Complete","","Certain","MEDIEVAL","MEDIEVAL","","Metal detector","","Mrs Dot Boughton","","Mrs Dot Boughton","CUMBRIA","","BARROW IN FURNESS","","","","","SD2272","SD27SW","","","","","","Dalton","","Crowned bust facing","EDWAR[...]B","long cross dividing legend with pellets in angles","VILL[ABEREVVICI]","Penny","3","","","","","","3","","","15","3447","","Regular","2","1","","","cross","","1","","","","Edward I of England","","","","Berwick on Tweed","Very worn: fair","","English coin Edwardian type 1279 - 1377","Edward I, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Class 2; Wither types 2a, 2b, 3, 10 (N 1073-1075)","","","","343818","DMDT803932.jpg","images/dboughton/",
