<description>
<full>A complete copper&#45;alloy &#39;unlooped shield pattern&#39; palstave dating to the middle Bronze Age. The axe has a flared cutting edge and a rectangular butt. The axe has a shield&#45;shaped hollow located on either side of the stop ridge. Both shields are decorated with three moulded ribs. The blade is decorated with a moulded mid&#45;rib on either side.
The axe measures 160mm long and is 66mm wide. The blade is 18mm thick after the stop and tapers to the cutting edge. The distance from the butt to the inside of the stop is 60mm. The butt measures 23mm by 30mm The sides of the butt are triangular in plan. The interior of the butt displays frequent linear grooves caused by wear, though it is not clear at what point in history this wear occured. The grooves share the same patina as the rest of the axe, suggesting that the wear is of some antiquity however.
The axe has gas a dull green&#45;brown patina with frequent pitted areas of bright green copper corrosion.</full>
