A Medieval cast copper alloy dagger guard or quillon probably dating from 1200 - 1300 AD. It consists of a curving metal strip, at its widest in the centre (10.95mm), where it is 9.8mm thick. Inside this area is a 30.78x4.39mm slot (which would have been for the dagger blade). Either side, the strip narrows as it curves downwards to slightly thicker and bulbous ends. On the lower edge in the centre of the blade slot, the guard has a decorative lobe, pointing downwards. The London Museum Medieval Catalogue discusses quillon daggers and suggests that quillons that droop slightly towards the point are frequently illustrated in mid 13th century sources. Compare also NMS-DA5724, WILT-4581D3 and WMID-AEE185.
