449544
created2":"2011 06 22

An incomplete cast copper alloy lid for a set of nested cup weights, of Modern dating (18th to 19th Centuries AD).

The underside of the lid consists of a circular base, with a raised rectangular rim around the edge. A double concentric circle has been incised into the base, with two smaller complete circles located at the top and bottom. Two circular perforations (internal diameter 1.58mm) are located towards the far edge, on the concentric circles. A line of three circular indentations / attachment scars are located on the other side of the dial, towards what may be the remnants of a hinge.

The top of the lid has been decorated with another series of concentric incised circles: a Double set on the edge, and then increasing in number as they get towards the centre. Three sets of markings or counterstrikings are present: a cloud like design; Four capital letter Is; and an irregular semi-circular design with a cross at the top. A handle has been attached to the back, using two integrally cast semi circular shanks. The tops of each have a double V shaped groove present across the width. The handle is semi circular in plan, and lentoid in cross section. It has a sub triangular knop located at the central point. A sub rectangular ridge is present opposite the handle. This extends past the edge of the lid, possibly as a hinge.

The lid is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

It has a diameter of 40.96mm. It measures 40.96mm in length, 45.42mm wide and 12.66mm thick. It weighs 28.1 grams.

This find was initially identified as a probable sundial. However following discussions with other FLOs and comparison with more recent finds, it has been reidentified as a lid for a set of nested cup weights.
