Early post-Medieval glazed earthenware Ticknall ware Midlands Purple / Cistercian ware jug/pitcher, almost complete, mid 16th-early 17th century. Globular vessel with single handle attached from high up on the body to the neck. Neck bulges at the centre; top of neck and rim broken off. handle and narrow neck broken off. Flat beaded base. Metallic purplish-brown glaze over most of the external surface except around the bottom & base where it dribbles unevenly; the glaze is flecked with white specks (characteristic of Ticknall ware). Orange-red fabric. Height c.180mm, diameter of base c.80mm, diameter of neck c.30mm.

A similar Midlands Purple ware vessel (although a waster) is illustrated in Usher's 'Ticknall Pottery and the Calke Collection' (1989 (reprint 2000), Derby Porcelain International Society Journal), p.8 no.11; said to have been found during building work on a house in Ticknall, it is described as a harvest jug, and dated to the early 17th century.
