445634
created2":"2011 06 03

A complete cast copper alloy double looped trapezoidal buckle of Post Medieval dating (1620 - 1680 AD).

The buckle frame is sub rectangular / trapezoidal in plan, and rectangular in profile. The pin is present and is formed from a single sub-rectangular tapering length of copper alloy which is attached to the central bar by the end being folded to form an irregular 'wrap around' loop. A horizontal incised line on either side, serves as a pin rest . This line forms part of an incised decoration, with a vertical line on either side. Opposite the pin a large rounded triangular integrally cast projection extends. At the corners of the buckle frame are sub-rectangular (rounded diamond shape) projections. The reverse of the buckle is plain and undecorated.

The buckle is a mid brown to mid green colour, with an abraded surface patina. Movement in the ploughsoil has resulted in the buckle becoming asymmetrical, and slightly bowed in profile.

The buckle measures 42.58mm long, 28.36mm wide, is 7.32mm thick and weighs 8.6 grams.

The buckle is a dark purple green colour with a slightly abraded polished patina that covers all surfaces. Several comparative examples have been published, in particular #520, #522 and #524 by Whitehead (2003, p82-84). He has dated these buckles to the Post Medieval period (c.1620 to c. 1680 AD).

"datefound1":null,"datefound2":null
"numdate1":"1620","numdate2":"1680

A complete cast copper alloy double looped trapezoidal buckle of Post Medieval dating (1620 - 1680 AD).

The buckle frame is sub rectangular / trapezoidal in plan, and rectangular in profile.
