A post-medieval/modern platform gunflint possibly from a flintlock musket, or pocket pistol, given its small size. The flint is rectangular in plan. The upper and lower surfaces are flat; the bulb is not present. The ?dorsal face is bevelled on all sides, very steeply at the proximal end. There is some retouching to the distal end. The flint is mid- to light-grey in colour.
Notes:
The flintlock was introduced in the middle of the 16th century but it was not until the reign of William III that the flintlock became the main regulation firearm for the British Army. The production technique suggests a date between the late 18th century and mid 19th century. Thanks are extended to Dr Hugo Lamdin-Whymark for his comments on this flint (pers. comm. 26 April 2012). The knapped flint was used within the musket mechanism to produce a spark and would last between 20-25 shots before it had to be replaced. A gun-flint workshop is known from Over Wallop, Hampshire (Bond 2004, 163-164).
