BROOCH

Unique ID: DENO-928643

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

TREASURE ITEM: 2011 T284. Complete cast gold annular brooch of Medieval date. The frame is circular in plan and semi-circular in cross section with a constriction for the pin. The front of the frame is decorated with a series of six opposed pairs of incised chevrons with incised stippled decoration between. There is no pin rest. The reverse of the brooch frame is plain. The pin, which is complete, is sub-square in section and tapers to a point. It is looped around the frame constriction with a single raised ridge, at the point where the loop meets the main body of the pin, serving as the only decoration.

Brooches of this type are typically dated from the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries, c.1200-1400.

It is worth noting that the brooch is very small in dimensions, being only 11.4mm in diameter, and therefore could only have been used to secure very light-weight fabrics.

Dimensions: Diameter 11.4mm, Width (inside to outside) 1.6mm, Thickness (front to back) 0.8mm, Weight 0.7g. Pin length 12.4mm, Pin width 1.1mm.

This item is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal, and therefore should be considered Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996".
