A small silver vervel, or hawking ring, flat and circular in plan with a rectangular cross-section. The exterior of the hoop bears the following inscription in italic script, divided over both faces: 'Mr Will Russell of Stratton / in Hampshire' (where the first 's' in Russell and the 's' in Hampshire are long).
William Russell, Lord Russell (1639-1683), inherited the manor of East Stratton in 1667 and was executed in 1683 for his part in the Rye House Plot; the vervel dates to this period (Hampshire VCH 1908, Vol. 4, p. 299).
Notes:
As the vervel contains at least 10% silver and is at least 300 years old, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
