A Medieval (1100-1200) silver finger ring, now slightly squashed. It measures 23.83x18.83mm in (squashed) diameter (internal 22.25x16.59mm) and weighs 1.85g.
The ring is flat in cross section (5.43mm at its widest, 2.78mm at its narrowest and 0.75mm thick) and has engraved decoration to the outside surface on one half (the wider half) only. The decoration comprises four rectangular panels interspersed with three square panels.
The centre-most square panel depicts a cross-crosslet of X form (as opposed to +), the area around carrying traces of possible red enamel. The other two squares depict, within a circle or lozenge shape, four lozenge-and-pellets arranged around an empty X-shaped area. In each corner of the square is an inverted V-shape.
The rectangular panels comprise four longitudinal flat ribs, the outermost of each being decorated with transverse grooves. The finger-ring narrows from the central panel (max.width) to the end panels (4.47mm and 3.62mm respectively).
The ring corresponds to a type known from the Lark Hill hoard, Worcester (buried c. 1173-4 and usually inlaid with niello), and examples of casual loss from Llanfaes, Anglesey; Tre-gof, near St Hilary Down, Llanbleddian, near Cowbridge, and two from Caldicot (Treasure Annual Report 1999).
