BROOCH

Unique ID: NARC-1AEEF7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper alloy moulded disc brooch. 2nd century AD.

Circular with 6 evenly spaced lobes protruding from the edge. The lobe at the 12 o'clock position is larger and at the reverse accomodates the mechanism to hold the spring. Three turns of the spring are still present, but the pin is missing. The pin appears to be iron and has corroded leaving corrosion within the concave reverse. The lobe at the 6 o'clock position accomodates the catchplate which is complete.

The outer circle is 24mm in diameter and 3mm wide. It is slightly concave and appears to hsve been tinned, although iron corrosion has obscured much of the surface area. The raised central circular plate is 15mm in diameter and is split into 12 square cells, which holds plain and millefiori glass in alternate positions. Each cell is 2.5mm wide. The millefiori pattern within each alternate square is alternate blue and white lozenge shapes. In the centre of the brooch is a circular hole 7mm in diameter with bevelled edges. The probably held a stone or glass inlay.

Similar can be seen in Hattatt's visual catalogue (page 346, Figure 205, Number 1055,r described in more detail in Hattatt's Brooches of Antiquity) although Hattatt's example has a hinged pin, rather than sprung.
