The handle is an elongated 'tear drop' shape, with a rounded end. The front exhibits a central ridge (Hanoverian terminal) and the back is flat. Two initials have been scratched on the reverse 'S*C', presumably those of the original owner.
The handle has broken across the hallmark, with only the standard mark being present. This mark consists of a Lion passant, facing left in a rectangular cartouche, with a small triangle removed next to the lion's head.
This has been reported as Potential Treasure, due to potential age and silver content. Treasure number: 2011T237Comparable spoons to found in English silver spoon, Michael Snodin, London 1974, plate 24, dated 1720. This seems a likely date for this piece.
The find dates to later than 1711 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.2011-04-10 11:32:182013-03-21 15:18:50312011-04-0316Certain113636PAS4DA1872F0018E522121LVPLSilver11728CastIncompletePOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxPOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxMetal detectorCircaCirca42159681277961791441423Restricted AccessCalverton343691LVPL-1872F4.jpg4Post Medieval: Spoon terminalNational Museums Liverpool 5images/tgilmore/East MidlandsEuropean RegionCountyNottinghamshireDistrictGedlingCivil Parish53.0532-1.10742Restricted AccessReturned to finder after being declared not Treasure96805
