Complete silver finger ring, with one break through the hoop. The hoop is octagonal in shape with a rectangular section. The outer face of the hoop has worn engraved lettering visible, which may have originally have been filled with niello, possible traces of which survive. The lettering appears to read TEBRLGVTGVTATII. Similar combinations of magical words (Tebal, Gut) were frequently employed as charms on jewellery during the medieval period, and were thought to offer protection against ill-health, fever or tooth-ache. The style of the lettering indicates a medieval date.
Dimensions: 20.52mm externally and 17.87mm internally, 2.25g in weight.
The style of the worn inscription indicates a medieval date for this finger ring, although no exact parallel of octagonal shape could be found. The lettering may indicate a 13th-14th Century date.
