This coin is an example of the relatively common CL CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT issue minted at Lyon between 2 BC and at least 4 AD (RIC Vol. I revised, p. 55, no. 207). Traces of gilding on both sides indicate that it was probably adapted in an attempt to pass it off as the similar, but much heavier, aureus (RIC no. 206). The other possibility is that it is a silver plated copy (normally on an iron core at this time, thus explaining the brown colour of some of the coin) and that some of the silver has oxidised to give a golden colour.

The surfaces of the coin are worn. It measures 18.7mm in diameter, 1.7mm thick and weighs 3.47g.

According to Sutherland, imitations of this coin series are '...of widespread provenance' (55, footnote 205). What is not clear, however, is whether gilded denarii form part of this group of forgeries. No such coins appear to have hitherto been recorded on the PAS database.","","","2011-03-21 16:19:57","2011-03-31 16:01:00","3","1","1","2010-02-20","","","","","1","1","4","4","","","","","County / local importance","jwatters","Julian Watters","BH","sam","Sam Moorhead","Silver","","","","Struck or hammered","Gilded","Complete","Fair","Certain","ROMAN","","","Metal detector","","Mr Harvey Cross","Mr Julian Watters","Mr Julian Watters","CAMBRIDGESHIRE","","SOUTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE","","","","","TL4443","TL44SW","","","","","","Duxford","From Map","Laureate head right.","[CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE]","Gaius and Lucius Caesar, on left and right, standing front, each togate and resting hand on shield; behind each shield, a spear; above, on left, simpulum right; above, on right, a lituus left.","(CL) CAESARES (ex.), AVGVSTI [F COS DESIG] PRINC IVVENT","Denarius (Empire)","2","","","","1","2","2","","","","","","Contemporary copy (Plated copy) ","1","1","1","1","","","3","","","","Augustus","","Period 1","Pre AD 41","Lyon (Lugdunum)","Worn: fine","2 o'clock","","","1","2","","322840","Roman_coin_11_52_4.jpg","images/jwatters/",
