CHAFING DISH
Unique ID: LANCUM-0CFCC5
Object type certainty: Certain
Cast cu-alloy rim fragment of an early post-medieval chafing dish dating from the 16th century. Only part of the rim and one of the characteristic 'spikes' survive. The dish was undecorated, but there are some mouldings and thin grooves on the inside and outside. The spike is triangular in plan with a trapzoidal cross-section.
Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table. This particular fragment is from a B2 chafing-dish. This type of dish dates to the 16th century (Lewis: 1973, 'Some types of metal chafing-dish', Antiquaries Journal, Volume 53 pp. 60-70 Society of Antiquaries).
