A copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative (two-piece) brooch, dating from the mid to late 1st century.
The wings are of thin section, with flat surfaces. At the centre of the underside is a perforated lug, into which the now-missing axis bar would originally have slotted. Part of the spring mechanism does survive, held in place by the external chord, which sits within a second lug, located directly above the first. At either end of the upper surface of the wings there is a pair of transverse grooves. A ridge on top of the head extends into the bow, the latter of which is of flattened-oval section and has been squashed. The width and thickness of the bow decrease towards the foot, where there is a transverse groove. The closed catchplate has a rolled outer side. The brooch measures 33.6mm long, 19.4mm wide and weighs 4g.
