A fragment of a Medieval to post-Medieval scabbard chape, probably for a dagger (c. 1450-c. 1600). This is the bottom part of a chape. It is 'U'-shaped in plan, convex at the front and has a rounded knop at the base. Close to the top, just beneath the ragged transverse break, there is a prominent horizontal rib. Part of the separate copper-alloy back has survived and is in poor condition. The knop is flat at the back. This object has a mid-green patina. 26.8 x 20.7 x 4.3mm. Weight: 4.09g. A similar and more complete chape has been published and dated late 15th-16th century (Read 2001: 84, ref: 686).
