A Post Medieval copper alloy sundial dating to the 17th - 18th century. This sundial comprises a circular band forming a ring with a circumferential groove around the centre and a slit that extends approximately one third along the length of this groove. The shape of the ring has been distorted and flattened. It is broken across two small circular perforations which probably originally secured the ring from which the sundial would be suspended. Originally there would have been a small slide within the slit used for telling the time, but this is missing. Opposite the slit \"OCT\" is marked on the external surface.
\nThe outer surface of the dial has the months of the year incised in a graduated scale, indicated by their initial letter. January to June are indicated left to right on the upper half of the dial, above the central groove if the attachment loop is at the right. These letters are stamped I F M A M I. By inverting the dial, the months of July to December can be read from left to right on the upper half. These are I A S O N D. The earlier months are now upside-down on the lower half of the dial. When the dial is orientated this way, the markings on the inner surface are legible from left to right and the right way up.
\nThis inner surface is essentially the clock face. There are two circumferential grooves which divide the inner surface into thirds. The upper row has the numbers 1-7, the middle row has the number 12 below the number 1 on the row above and the lower row has the numbers 11, 10, 9, 8 arranged in that order below the 12. There are diagonal lines extending the width of the ring through each of the upper row numbers. The copper alloy has a mid green patina.<\/p>
