BELL
Unique ID: LON-D6BEF2
Object type certainty: Certain
A Medieval - Post Medieval copper alloy closed (rumbler) form bell dating late 13th - mid 16th century. This bell consists of a pair of hemispheres soldered together. One has a dumbbell-shaped aperture and the other is pierced to accept a sheet metal suspension loop which is also soldered into place. The pea would have been iron; the bell is now filled with concretion and there is some evidence of iron staining. The shape of the lower hemisphere is slightly distorted due to damage.
Similar bells are illustrated in Egan & Prichard (1991:328) and Egan (2005:57) where the bells are know from deposits of the late 13th - mid 16th century.
Dimensions: length: 20.17mm; diameter: 19.01mm; weight: 8.50g.
