FINGER RING

Unique ID: LON-997AB6

Object type certainty: Probably

A Post Medieval lead alloy incomplete ring, probably a finger ring, dating from the late 17th century. Approximately half of the ring remains. The ring comprises a broad band where the outer surface is decorated with a filigree pattern. The pattern consists of lozenges with a ring and pellet inside; each lozenge is separated by two further ring and pellets. There is a circumferential band of filigree above and below the decoration forming a border. Traces of a gold coloured layer remain in the crevasses around the filigree and on the internal surface of the ring.

XRF results show the metal is predominantly tin with a small percentage of antinomy. No gold was picked up so the gold coloured layer is possibly a paint layer. There were traces of copper and iron. The use of antimony with tin is known from the late 17th century in England and was common until the mid 19th century. It continues today as Britannia metal.
