The slashes are mostly approximately 50 to 70mm in length and some are larger. The piece is incomplete and has a number of torn edges. A short length of a 'proper' edge remains with three button holes. These button holes are c. 15mm in length with one rounded end, narrowing to a slit. There are also the remains of two stitched edges, both with small flesh/grain stitch holes c. 4mm apart. Both stitched edges appear to curve but both are incomplete. Both, however, terminate at the same 'proper' edge with has vertical cuts in it, presumably decorative.

The slashing allowed the coloured clothing worn underneath to be pulled through in colourful puffs, creating a rather flamboyant style of dress.

Fragments of slashed jerkin have been found during archaeological excavations at Tooley St in Southwark by MOLA (site code TYT98).

Dimensions: length: 290mm; width: 263mm
