An incomplete and corroded post-Medieval copper-alloy knife handle (1500-1700).

This handle is slightly misshapen and there is a transverse break at one end. It has two parallel side bars, rectangular in cross-section and a circular open-work terminal. The circular open-work terminal has spherical knop on an extended neck. At each side of the circle are three evenly spaced knops, the centre ones are slightly larger and project outwards further. At the opposite end there is a transverse break.

41.4 x 14.9 x 3.6mm. Weight: 5.86g.

This object is corroded and has no patina. It is mainly covered in copper-alloy corrosion deposits.

There is a complete example illustrated on page 29 of the 2014 (3rd) edition of Benet's, ref. KF-42777. Other references to partial examples include Goodall in Shepherd Popescu 2009, 861; fig. 10.55, ref. SF7561 - 18th-century context at Norwich Castle, and Thomas & Boucher (eds.) 2002, 160; fig. 7.38; no. 64 - mid/late 16th-century deposit in Hereford. As such a c. 16th-century date seems plausible pending further information.
