<full>A Medieval copper alloy and lead alloy incomplete sword pommel dating c. AD1250 - 1500. This pommel is a Type VIII wheel-shaped pommel (Ward-Perkins 1993:22). It is circular in plan with an elongated octagonal cross-section creating the faceted surface. There is a rectangular perforation extending through the length of the pommel through which the tang of the blade would have passed. This perforation is larger at the handle end and narrows towards the butt (length: 10.89mm; width: 5.11mm). There is some damage to the handle end of the pommel and the lower section of the outer shell and inner weighting is missing obscuring the detail of the larger perforation. Inside the copper alloy shell lead alloy has been used to weight the pommel so that it acts as a counter-balance to the weight of the blade. There is an engraved image of the front elevation of a building on each side of the pommel. The image is repeated on each side. It shows a building with three crenellated turrets separated by two pitched roofs, a central round-arched doorway with a cross-crosslet to each side.

These pommels are common in the 13th - 14th century similar examples have been recorded on the database under NCL-DA7463 and NCL-DA9B37.

Dimensions: thickness: 31.09mm; diameter: 49.84mm; weight: 96.32g.
