A copper alloy mount probably from a medieval casket, box or similar item. The mount is rectangular in plan. One end is slightly widened and there is a dome headed rievt through the centre of the terminal. There is a similar rivet at the opposite end, though this end is not widened. Both are original eands rather than breaks, as the end of the metal is gilded. In the centre of the mount is a transverse rectangular depression with a circular hole through it. This seems too large to be a rivet hole. It is more worn towards the end with the wider terminal. The two areas between the recessed area and the terminals are each decorated with a spread eagle (or other bird) moulded in relief. Both birds have their tails towards the recessed area, their heads turned to their right, and have moulding to represent the feathers. Most of the front is gilded, as well as the sides, ends and back of the mount. The reverse is not flat but is stepped, with the terminals and central recessed area projecting further back than the rest. No close parallel has been found for this mount, but similar casket fittings include IOW-174557, SWYOR-13C482 and IOW-1A2011. casket fittings in The Medieval Household seem to mainly date from 1350 - 1400 AD.
