MOUNT

A copper alloy figurative mount in the form of a dog or hound. It may be from a Late Medieval vessel such as an ewer since the style of the moulding on the head is very similar to that on spouts from ewers. The dog is crouched. It has bulging lentoid eyes, a ridge along the centre of its head, bunched haunches on its front legs and a short tail curled upwards. The underside of its legs are flat, but a patch of corrosion may indicate that it was soldered to a larger object. The style of the head is so similar to ewer spouts, that it is suggested that this could be a knop from the lid of a similar vessel. No close paralells have been found for this object. WAW-F5F8E0 is a stud or mount that has some similarities. NMGW-9D1A44 seems to have had a similar function but is in a different style and is much more likely to be Roman than this example. A seated dog is depicted in figure 8c as the handle on the top of a ewer (Aquamaniles and Ewers datasheet published by the FRG) and seated dogs are also know from salt containers found in London (page 192 and 193 of The Medieval Household). It seems likely that this figurine or mount has a similar date of about 1350 - 1550.
