"417121","LON-BC7215","PAS4CEBC721001AAD","Vessel","","","","","","","","1","","","ROMAN","140","260","A Roman ceramic body sherd from a Samian bowl of East Gaulish type dating c. AD140 - 260.  This fragment has been badly burnt which has caused the fabric to turn grey and the slip dark grey/black.  This sherd is from a decorated Dragendorff 37 bowl.  The decoration comprises a row of ovulus with a medallions below separated by a twisted rope motif.  This is not black samian which Webster (1996:10) describes as a standard samian fabric with reduced surface (presumably achieved by altering the kiln atmosphere at the very end of the firing).
