A Roman ceramic body sherd from a Samian bowl of East Gaulish type dating c. AD140 - 260. This fragment has been badly burnt which has caused the fabric to turn grey and the slip dark grey/black. This sherd is from a decorated Dragendorff 37 bowl. The decoration comprises a row of ovulus with a medallions below separated by a twisted rope motif. This is not black samian which Webster (1996:10) describes as "a standard samian fabric with reduced surface (presumably achieved by altering the kiln atmosphere at the very end of the firing)".
