'D' shaped buckle with frame and plate intact, pin missing; loop joined to plate with separate hinge pin; both frame and plate have gilding and ?chip carved ornament, geometric on the frame; the plate has a zoomorphic design of 2 birds (?peacocks) vis a vis in two registers; there are 2 rivets in the back of the plate, one in place, the other missing
Notes:
no parallels in Allason-Jones and Mieket or in Oldenstein. C Johns of the British Museum says (letter 4/11/98): 'I would be inclined (to call the piece) early medieval rather than late Roman.'
