COIN HOARD

Unique ID: NMS-D172C4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

The seven coins comprising the hoard were found between October 2010 and February 2012, scattered over a small area.

All of the seven coins are short cross pennies of John or Henry III. None show a great deal of wear, their indifferent condition being due to poor striking. Since class 7b begins in 1222 and closes in 1236 we may assume a date of loss or deposition sometime in the 1220s or 1230s. Given that only one example of the common class 7 series is present (although the sample is admittedly small) the date is probably earlier in this range rather than later.

Catalogue:

Roberd of Dublin, weight 1.31g

Uncertain Canterbury moneyer, class 5b-6

Davi of York, class 5b2

Ilger of London, class 5c

Rauf of London, class 6c2

Simon of Canterbury, class 7a (weight 1.32g)

Iun of Canterbury, class 7b

Date: 1220s -1230s. Two or more coins of precious metal and greater than 300 years age lost or deposited together qualify as Treasure. Given their close issue dates and the fact that they were found in a small area it is overwhelmingly likely that these five coins went into the ground together, probably in the context of a lost purse or similar receptacle. Thus they represent a priori a case of Treasure. Adrian Marsden
