<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A Bronze Seal for the Cloth Subsidy of the County of Essex. From the late 13th century to the 15th century.

Inscription: S&#39;SUBSIDII PANNORUM IN COMT ESSE

Central motif: Kings Head.

The seal will most likely have had a wooden handle, which in now missing.

Comments by John Cherry: There are a number of these seals in the British Museums collections. A B Tonnochy Catalogue 1954 no&#39;s 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33. They run from the late 13th century to the fifteenth. Presumably each county had one (possibly more). This one has a crowned head in the middle and I would suggest a late 13th or early 14th century date.</full>
