STRAP FITTING</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A cast, copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting linkage or similar. It consists of two elements. The first is a copper alloy loop which has a convex outer face and is hollow on the inside. The hollow is filled with concretion or corrosion products. This circular loop is fitted on the second element which is a flat rectangular loop (broken at one end) with rounded corners. The metal is slightly different and is more flaky. It is elaborately moulded and decorated on both faces with flowers (roses?) in the centre of the long side, and scrolls. The frame is decorated with raised transverse lines. The object probably dates from the 18th or 19th century, which is supported by comparison to buckles of the period, but a published parallel has not been found.

A fragment of a second identical fitting was found in the same place and is also included in the record. It is not the missing piece of the more complete example.

These items were at first thought to be sword belt fittings. This is still possible, but they are atypical in being decorated on both faces, and are not the same shape as other known examples.</full>
