AXEHEAD

Unique ID: YORYM-386DF5

Object type certainty: Certain

A cast copper-alloy palstave axehead of the mid-late Bronze Age. The axe is experiencing active corrosion and has a mid greenish-brown, pitted patina. This axehead was found as a single, isolated find.

This piece was probably made circa 1500-1150 BC. The artefact is sub-rectangular in plan, the width expanding slightly towards the end of the blade, but tapers towards the butt end. The blade tips measure 30.9mm, while the butt end measures 21.1mm. The blade is flat and rather featureless, but two large flanges overhang each face, these are curved and very prominent. The palstave has no central stop, but measures 21.3mm x 27mm at its widest central measurement. There is no attachment loop visible. The butt end extends from the centre, tapering to a more rounded terminal. The butt end is also featureless. Neither the blade end or the butt end feature any form of sharpening or hammering. The sides appear to have lost the casting flash, with no trace of it being visible, as they may have been removed shortly after production.

The faces of the palstave are corroded but there are small patches of the original surfaces surviving. The object measures 105.4mm long and 21.5mm wide. The weight is 144g.
