Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-Medieval hooked mount for a sword belt (c. 1500-c. 1650). The fitting consists of a domed oval plate, 21.5mm in length with a maximum width of 17.8mm. The plate is concave on the reverse. It has a terminal at one end and a hook at the opposite end. The terminal is sub-oval in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. It has the remains of a separate iron rivet. There is a transverse moulded rib between this terminal and the oval dome. The front of the dome has three longitudinal facets (flat at the front and sloping at the sides). At the opposite end of the plate there is a single moulded rib similar to the aforementioned rib although it is slightly larger. Beyond this moulding is an integral rearward projecting hook, now incomplete. The hook is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear. At the rear of the moulding, between the plate and the hook, there is a stub of an integral stud/rivet. Decoration on the front of the domed plate consists of curvilinear grooves that may have formed a floral design. However, due to corrosion the overall design has been lost. This object is largely corroded and a shiny dark green patina partially covers the domed plate at the front. 48.1 x 17.8 x 8.9mm. Weight: 10.55g.
