It is not possible to be certain that this is an ancient loss, but the patina and level of preservation is consistent with other ancient copper-alloy artefacts found in the area, suggesting that it has been in the soil for some time. As such, there is a strong probability that the coin was not lost by an antiquarian or more recent collector.
