<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A complete Roman (AD 50&#45;150) copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch with spring mechanism, the head of which is now a little bent. It measures 57.57mm in length and weighs 12.5g.

The wings, which are C&#45;shaped in section, span 24.42mm. The spring behind is a little longer, 27.24mm wide. To the front the wings are decorated with a pair of transverse grooves flanking the open ends.
The bow projects from the top of the wings and has a central rib which extends from the rearward&#45;facing double&#45;pierced lug to the reverse. The copper alloy axis bar is still intact and visible passing through the coils, as is the chord which passes above it. At this point the bow measures 6.16x7.81mm. The central rib is defined on either side by a groove which tapers to about half way along the bow. At this point the bow extends to the reverse into a large catchplate 21.48mm tall, complete with curl intact. At the foot, defined with a tiny horizontal groove, the bow has narrows to 1.18mm wide.
To the reverse the pin is circular in section, terminating in a point. In length it extends into the top half of the catchplate only.
