Late Iron Age or early Roman copper alloy brooch of La Tene III, Nauheim derivative type dated to c.30-70 AD. The brooch head, spring and pin are missing and only a small part of the catchplate remains due to old breaks. The bow rises vertically from the head before bending at 90 degrees after which it has a shallow convex curve towards the foot where is bends down at 90 degrees before expanding into the catchplate, this second bend is probably due to damage. It is flat with rounded edges and the front is decorated with a central row of punched indents which are so closely spaced they mostly merge into a line. It widens quickly from the head to 4.1mm across at the bend and reaches the widest point one third of the way down where it is 4.7mm wide by 2.1mm thick, it then tapers in width gradually towards the foot where it ends in a point. The catch plate fragment is 3.7 by 2.9 by 0.7mm thick. It is 32.5mm long and weighs 1.89 grams.

Bailey and Butcher (2004) illustrated many similar examples (p.56), some complete, although mostly undecorated.
