TOOTH PICK
Unique ID: HAMP-4669A5
A Roman cast copper-alloy toothpick. The artefact has a comma shaped terminal blade that curves round to one side as it tapers to a point; the tip is slightly truncated and bent. At the other end is a slight indent on both sides, although these are misaligned, before a narrow stem continues. The stem expands slightly at the other end (W.: 4.4mm) to receive a perforation presumably for suspension; the terminal has been broken at the hole where the sides are narrow and weak. The blade is flat and plain; it measures 27.6 by 19.6 by 1.05mm. The stem is also flat and plain with a rectangular cross section. It has buckled slightly post deposition.
The blade is of a common late Roman form, with four silver examples known from the Hoxne hoard (Johns 2010, 133-135; refs. 150-153). They are normally accompanied by an ear scoop at the other end; we have noted on this example rather the presence of a loop which may suggest that this object was suspended from a chatelaine.
This is a find of note and has been designated: Potential for inclusion in Britannia
