A fragment from the head of an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch of 6th century date.
The fragment consists of a top or side 'knob' from the head of the brooch. It is sub-rectangular in plan and section, and is a flattened knob or a later more florid variety of cruciform brooch. The face of the knob bears a Style I mask with thick brows over raised pellet eyes. The nose is also raised, sub-triangular in plan, and there are raised pellets for cheeks, with a raised slight C-shaped triangular mouth. The reverse has a plate attached with a raised semi-circular portion in its middle. This would have provided the gap needed for an axis or similar fitting, which would have connected the knob to the headplate of the brooch. The breaks occur at the top of the mask and the bottom rather than the sides, suggesting this was an independent side or top knob rather than a secondary border that fitted around three sides of the head.
