A medieval finger-ring, triangular in section, with an inscription in two bands around the outer surface. The letters and symbols on the upper register are indecipherable but consist of eight characters. Those on the lower register spell:
+ALRLARIA
which bears some resemblance to the popular invocation
AVE MARIA (Hail Mary)
On the inner surface are several more letters crudely incised and difficult to read:
+XT(or R)OZ(?)HOII
Whatever their meaning, these letters most probably carried amuletic significance.
The ring is silver and dates from the fourteenth century.
Dimensions: diameter 19 mm.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
