Missing spring, pin, part of spring case, catchplate; very bent. There are slight traces of a white metal coating on the bow and spring case. The end plate on the cylindrical spring case has iron staining in the axis bar hole. The spring case is undecorated and separated from the main bow by a transverse rib. The bow is D-section with a plain rounded front, curving in rapidly and then expnding into the flat ended foot. Original length c.30mm, surviving width 15mm. Although many knee brooches are Continental in origin Snape 1993 suggests that this type with unfacetted bow is best paralleled in Britain; they are more common in the military north thasn the south-east.
