BROOCH

Unique ID: HAMP1967

Cast copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a horse and rider. Flat. The missing pin was held between two pierced semi-circular lugs behind the horse's haunches. Catchplate intact, but outer edge slightly damaged. The foreleg is missing, but half of the hind leg is intact. The tail is cropped and the horse's head is elongated with a wide and rounded muzzle. The rider is well-moulded, with the hair and beard defined with incised oblique lines. The vertical mane of the horse is similarly depicted.

The rider's foot is depicted below the horse's girth. The rider holds a whip vertically in his hand and his body, both sides of the arm and whip, are recessed to hold enamel, no trace of which now survives. The horse's body is divided into four recessed cells, but no enamel now survives in any. Dull pale green patina. This is a very well-modelled example, with much facial detail.
