STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: NMGW-3F88F4

Object type certainty: Certain

Cast copper alloy strap union formed by a raised reverse S-scroll, the back of which is flat, enclosing two circular bosses 11mm in diameter and with two vertical strap bars, of circular section, attached by oval shaped lugs. The entire surface of the strap-union is quite corroded and pitted. Although the figure-of-eight form flanked by two vertical bars fits into Taylor and Brailsford?s Type 1 strap union category, the use of the S-scroll motif is only paralleled on the larger and more elaborate examples from Seven Sisters and Chepstow. These are classified as Type 2 and date to the 1st century A.D. (1985, p247-259). There are no other known examples of similar size and form, although Jope (2000, p178) defines the slender-waisted S-scroll as an insular artistic development established in the later half of the 1st century B.C. and continuing into the 2nd century A.D. Semi-quantitative analysis of the metal was carried out using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) which showed the main metal constituents to be copper and tin. The possible trace amounts of arsenic and nickel and the absence of any lead are consistent with an Iron Age bronze composition.

Notes:

Another Type 1 strap union was found at Aberthin, Cowbridge [NMGWPA:2201.45.1] in 2001 and is of roughly the same dimensions but displays the more typical conjoined looped figure-of-eight form and is decorated with simpler incised curvilinear motifs (Macdonald 2001, p127).
