SPINDLE WHORL

Five cast lead spindle whorls or possibly weights, all are circular with circular piercings. Whorl 1: Flat base, flattened domed top. 38.8mm in diameter, 13.3mm tall, hole 10.9mm in diameter, 120 grams. Whorl 2: Flat base with concave centre and raised border around outer edge and hole; shallow domed top. 29.4mm in diameter, 9.8mm tall, hole 8.6mm in diameter and weighs 38.53 grams. Whorl 3: Flat base, flattened domed top. 30.24mm in diameter, 11.9mm tall, hole 9.2mm in diameter, 63 grams. Whorl 4: Flat base, sides taper towards the flat top. 30.5mm in diameter at base, 28.5mm in diameter at top, 15.8mm tall, hole 11.6mm in diameter, 83 grams. Whorl 5: Flat base, sides taper inwards to hole opening at top. Base 26.0mm by 23.0mm, 9.7mm tall, 28.2 grams. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.
