The head is in the shape pentagon and is flat. It is decorated with a ring and dot on both faces, and the dot is pierced. Part of the pin shaft survives and is circular in section. It has a length of 27.93mm, width 9.50mm, thickness 2.05mm, weight 1.06g. Pins with perforated heads may have had a spangle suspended from the hole, or may have been part of a linked set. Alternatively, the object could be a pick from a cosmetic set. Perforated pins are considered to date from the first part of the Early Medieval period, but several unperforated flat headed pins were found in York and are published on page 2578 of Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York by Mainman and Rogers. This object and the attached records were recovered from a site which may be the location of an Early Medieval moot site, though later disturbance makes the site difficult to interpret. Archaeological work including trial trenching in advance of development has not yet revealed any further evidence.
