Coin
Unique ID: IOW-2B37E6
Object type certainty: Certain
A silver clipped miliarensis (light) of Valentinian I, 364-75; VIRTVS EXERCITVS; emperor standing facing, head left, holding standard and resting left hand on shield; Siscia, AD 367-75; Reece period 19. RIC IX, p. 147, no. 10a.
Notes:
The diadem is effectively a pearl-diadem, but there is a second rosette above the ear. Clipped miliarenses are scarce, only 8 of the 60 pieces in the Hoxne hoard being clipped. This particular coin is not represented in the Hoxne hoard, but the British Museum has one example.
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
