FINGER RING

Unique ID: WILT-469F46

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A Late Medieval/ Early Post-Medieval (15th or Early 16th century) silver-gilt finger-ring of iconographic type, measuring 23.72x24.04mm (internal 18.29x18.66mm) and weighing 7.26g. It has a crack in the hoop across one shoulder.

The bezel is triangular in section (c.4mm thick). The ring follows a form usually employed, though not exclusively, on iconographic finger rings. Here, however, the bezel of the ring does not carry engraved images of saints but, instead, is decorated with two facets either side of a high ridge. Decoration within these facets is grooved, and depicts a pair of opposed irregular triangles (one inside the other) separated by a diagonal band, and further embellished around the larger triangle and band with tiny grooves.

The shoulders, separated from the bezel by a wide groove, are also triangular in section and decorated with the same grooved triangles and band. Below is a moulded step before it extends into the hoop, still triangular in section but flatter. The hoop measures 4.72x1.56mm at the back.

Rings of this form usually are iconographic and commonly feature religious imagery, though examples are also found with simple geometric (as with this example) or floral decoration (eg. Treasure Annual Report 2000, nos 111-112). Also cf. SUSS-21B403 on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.
