Hoard 2 was buried in a ‘Black Burnished Ware’ jar, probably produced in south-western England, late third – early fourth century A.D. A hoard of approximately 3,545 coins. Hoard 2 was buried in a ‘Black Burnished Ware’ jar, pro... Both comprise Roman coins produced in the quarter-century following Diocletian’s reform of the Roman imperial coinage around A.D. 294-5. The coins are of copper alloys that contain small proportions of added silver, originally with silver-washed surfaces. As found, almost all coins are encrusted with copper corrosion products, mainly malachite. The coins have been washed in the museum to remove superficial soil deposits, but have not otherwise been cleaned or conserved. Many of the coins from the second hoard [08.4] form clusters or rouleaux of up to nine coins, held together by corrosion products and/or soil; these have as yet not been separated, so the precise make-up of this hoard has yet to be determined.
