FINGER RING

Unique ID: SF-B40896

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Medieval copper alloy probable finger ring. It is a flattened loop, rectangular in shape measuring 28.1mm in length and 9.12mm in width, and in thickness is 4.46mm at one short edge and 3.17mm at the other. The object weighs 5.07g. Its likely diameter would be c.21mm. There is an incised line of decoration forming a border which runs continuously round both long edges of the loop. There are traces of decoration in the form of small triangles or 'x's around the edges and of a probable inscription running round the central strip on both side. The surface is worn and the letters cannot be determined. Inscribed examples with a narrower band but similar diameter are known from Winchester (Biddle 1990, nos 2084, 2089).
