HARNESS PENDANT

Medieval cast copper alloy cruciform horse harness pendant. The cross is equal armed with a raised square at the centre and raised circular lobes at the end of each arm. The arms themselves are triangular in section with a flat back and ridge down the front. There is a central piercing with a seperate copper alloy rivet though it. The rivet appears complete with a domed head and flattened back around a sheet rove. If it riveted something to the pendant (rather than being decorative) it must have been relatively thin (not a leather strap for example). At the end of one arm is a complete, although bent transverse suspension loop. It is 35.7mm long including the loop 30.9mm wide and 5.6mm thick; it weighs 5.29 grams. There are traces of gilding on the front. Read 2001, p.57-58; figs. 36 and 37 illustrates a range of cruciform pendants many of which have central piercings or rivets. NMS-F60CD3 on this database is similar to this example and also has a cenral hole for a rivet. SWYOR-038F72 is an example still attached to it's susspension mount. Read (ibid: 48) suggests most are 14th century in date although a 13th century date is also possible.
