Tile
Unique ID: LON-522664
Object type certainty: Certain
Fragment of a Roman hypocaust tile (43-410 AD). The small fragment would have been part of a hypocaust tile, used for the construction of the Roman heating system. It has been made from an iron-rich fabric with well-mixed quartz temper and has been highly fired to produce a hard tile resistant to thermal shock. The reverse has been roller stamped with a geometric pattern before firing, using a wooden roller with a carved pattern. This pattern of alternately raised and recessed chevrons was intended to allow effective adhesion of the tile with mortar. Some traces of the Roman mortar remain in the recessions of the surface. The other side of the fragment is undecorated but has been slightly worn and has collected some concretion.
